The Sappers retain the Lawson Cup

By Tim Holland

RE Rugby League defeated REME Rugby League in the Lawson Cup Final at Odsal, home of the Bradford Bulls, on Sun 04 Sep 16.

The Sappers were victorious in this the 20th Anniversary Season of the Lawson (Inter-Corps) Cup competition, beating the REME 22 – 8, in a very tense and hard fought game, played at the Provident Stadium, Odsal Bradford, played as a curtain raiser to the Bradford Bulls game v Swinton Lions game on Sunday 4 September 2016.

The first ever Inter-Corps game was played between the newly formed REME RL and RE RL teams in 1996. RE RL have an incredible record and level of consistency, comparable with any team in any sport; winning the Lawson Cup on fifteen occasions.

The current generation of Sappers continue to lead the way playing Rugby League in the Army, as did the originals back in 1996. The Sappers made better decisions and made less mistakes under pressure, which will always be the major factor when such evenly matched and committed teams battle it out. Both sides are to be congratulated on their commitment. Well done to both teams and all their coaching and support staff.
