A great day of Rugby League was held in Aldershot on Wed 24 Jul 13, where approx 180 soldiers took the field of play in a 3 tier Cup, Plate and Bowl single day festival competition, in the 2013 Army RL Yeoman (Inter-Unit) Cup.
Competition Secretary WO1 (ASM) Andy Franklin and his supporting admin party of soldiers from 5 Bn REME again ran another extremely slick and well organised event, enjoyed by all who took part.
The results of the finals were:
ASPT (16) beat 9 Regt AAC (10) in Bowl Final.
33 Engr Regt (6) beat 4 Med Regt (0) in Plate Final.
3 YORKS (18) beat 4 Regt RA (0) in the Yeoman Cup Final.
Brigagier Frank Noble, Chairman Army Rugby League presented unique Army RL T-shirts to all 6 finalist teams, engraved salvers and the Yeoman Cup. 3 YORKS (The Dukes) won the Yeoman Cup Final for the 6th and last time, playing as the Dukes. The formation/renaming parade in Warminster of the new 1 YORKS on Thu 25 Jul 13 is the day following the Yeoman Cup Final on Wed 24 Jul 13. A very hard fought match; 6-0 at half time with outstanding Dukes defence holding out against relentless 4 Regt attack for several repeat sets prior to half time. 4 Regt were again camped on the Dukes line in the 2nd half but again, could not convert dominant pressure into points against ferocious defence, before the Dukes finally broke out scoring a couple of unanswered tries. A very poignant day for the Dukes, who have been the most successful Unit RL side, in the short history of Army Rugby League. Their only objective was to retain the Yeoman Cup and win one last time as the Dukes.
Well done the Dukes!
